Allergy Season

Allergy Season Is HereTo an Applied Kinesiologist, allergies mean much more that most people or physicians think. Allergies symptoms are signs of weaknesses in the body. If you have allergies you have health problems! But what do most people do? The majority of the population will head for the local drug store and get an allergy medication for any “hay fever” type symptoms. This may or may not help their symptoms, but it is not helping the real reason they have these allergies.

So where do allergies come from? There are many different scientific explanations for different types of allergic immune responses and anyone can find this information on the net or in medical textbooks. This information is being updated yearly with new advances in science to help us understand the reactions responsible for the issues of allergies, but I am going to approach this from a functional and holistic point of view.

Your basic “hay-fever”, animal hair/dander or any inhaled allergy problems are primarily due to digestive problems (stomach) and secondarily by functional adrenal gland weakness.

Many people have digestive problems and 80% of protein digestion happens in the stomach. The stomach’s function is very important for the rest of the digestive system to work. With the increase of advertising on television by the drug companies we are led to believe that indigestion is caused by too much acid in the stomach. From our clinical experience and knowledge, we see that most people with digestive problems do not have enough acid in their stomach and this is what causes the digestive problems. If you do not have enough acid in the stomach, the food that you eat will not be broken down properly. This will lead to the food irritating the stomach and intestines and lots of discomfort. The decreased stomach acid has also been shown to cause airborne allergy symptoms. If the stomach problems are corrected, then the allergies are relieved.

The adrenal glands are also involved with allergic reactions (more commonly with skin reactions but also with airborne allergies). The adrenal glands are our “stress glands” and help the body to back up many different systems including the process of inflammation. To find out more about the adrenal glands click here. When they are under increased stress for a long period of time we will have these inflammation problems which can appear as allergies.

Other parts of the body that are also “functionally” involved with allergic reactions are the pituitary gland, liver and a part of the digestive tract where the small and large intestine meet called the ileocecal valve.

For complete digestive and adrenal wellness, we need to remove any structural stresses in the spine, supply the stomach with a hydrochloric acid supplement and reduce emotional stresses. We also need to cut out any impure foods out of our diet and learn about eating right. Increased refined sugar, starches, wheat, corn, milk products and soy can cause inflammation in our digestive tract leading to adrenal stress and increased reactivity to airborne allergen.

If everybody were allergic to pollen and dust, then we would all have allergies. But we are not all sensitive to these materials. The people with the weaker digestive system and adrenal glands suffer form these symptoms but these symptoms can be corrected naturally. Correcting these problems from a functional point of view will save the person from many other potentially more serious health conditions down the road.
